Planetariums provide unique opportunity for science centres to inform and educate the visitors on various aspects of astronomy by simulating a dynamic sky. The celestial Environment created  inside a dome with minute details and accuracy of scales makes astronomy very lively. Visitors can actually see the performance of nature on its own cosmic stage, rather than being told about it. The learning impact and entertainment quotient of planetarium shows are therefore well accepted and validated universally.

 Measuring 8 mtrs. In diameter, the Puducherry Planetarium dome has a seating capacity for 50 persons. This planetarium has a special digital projector and the system has the inherent advantage that it can also incorporate real images/videos of cosmic events in the planetarium programme and can be used for immersive scientific and educational video shows.

Since the system of operation is computerized, new astronomy programmes or other educational based programmes can be created in house. In addition, the fully digital projection system can be tailor made to suit the changing needs and peoples expectations. The system gives greater flexibility in not only showing night sky as seen from the earth, but also from points that are far distant in space and time.
